The Wrong Gym Is So Right – A Design-Led Fitness Space in Bali

I’ll admit it, when I first heard the name The Wrong Gym, I paused. In a wellness world built on words like balance, alignment, and optimization, “wrong” felt… bold. But then I stepped into the space, and suddenly, it made perfect sense.

The Wrong Gym is a rebellion. It’s a design statement. And it’s unlike any other gym in Bali.

Right in the heart of Pererenan — Bali’s current hotspot for everything stylish and new — The Wrong Gym makes its presence known. But not through neon signs or influencer bait. It stands out by design. Think raw concrete and exposed steel softened by warm light, lush plants, and natural stone. It’s industrial, but never cold. Every surface, every material, every shift in atmosphere feels intentional.

The founder, a self-described outsider, created The Wrong Gym from a deeply personal place. After being told for years that his way of thinking was “wrong”. Wrong path, wrong ideas, wrong timing — he decided to own it. Reclaim it. What if being wrong was the beginning of something better?

That spirit pulses through the space. The Wrong Gym isn’t about fitting into a wellness template. Here, confidence and imperfection go hand in hand. The space encourages you to move, feel, and transform. Not just physically, but mentally too.

And the design? It’s a journey. Literally.

Inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy, the gym is arranged across three floors. The lowest level, Hell, is home to the bodybuilding zone — gritty, raw, and unapologetic. Climb to Purgatory on the middle floor, where the training floor and “Panic Room” are located. Then ascend to Heaven at the top, a sunlit studio for group classes that feels like a reward in itself. It’s dramatic, symbolic, and strangely emotional. And it works.

One of the most surprising things about The Wrong Gym is how personal it feels. Instead of cavernous open plans and rows of identical machines, the layout breaks up the space into intimate, moody pockets. Each area has a distinct purpose and vibe. It feels like a narrative unfolding, not just a workout.

The founder began with a concept drawn up by an Italian architect, but the space evolved continuously during the build. Materials changed. Layouts shifted. “The space had to reflect change,” he told me. “That’s how we grow, as humans, as creators. Nothing stays still.”

That openness to evolution is what sets The Wrong Gym apart. It’s not polished to perfection, it’s alive.

The aesthetic is somewhere between luxury streetwear and high-performance training. There’s a sense of underground cool, elevated by design. It feels exclusive, but never forced. Like a secret you want to keep, but can’t help sharing.

In a sea of overdesigned, underwhelming fitness concepts, The Wrong Gym reminds us that there’s beauty in breaking the rules and growth in being proudly, intentionally wrong.
