The Soulful Sanctuary of Kaba-Kaba Project

There’s an exciting upcoming development in the green landscape of southwestern Bali. The project has been created together by Design Assembly, a Bali-based architecture and design studio, and is called Kaba-Kaba Project. This residential sanctuary blends thoughtful design, environmental stewardship, and community-centric living. Comprising four family homes, this project has been crafted with local materials and traditional craftsmanship. Surrounded by vast tropical gardens, it could be your new home!

As long time residents of the island, Design Assembly has been creating meaningful spaces that reflect Bali’s cultural and ecological identity since 2015. Kaba-Kaba Project reflects their values of investing in Bali’s future. Their design philosophy focuses on developments in Bali that add value — to the environment, community, and people who inhabit their spaces.

I asked the team what drives this project, and they explained that they want development to uplift, instead of exploit. This very ethos is apparent, from material sourcing to community engagement. Kaba-Kaba Project is their way to set a standard for responsible development in Bali. The project embraces “slow design”—a design philosophy centered around sustainability, well-being, and craftsmanship. 

In the project’s design, each two-story family home is positioned in the 4 corners of the site, clad in natural materials, like reclaimed timber, bamboo, and stone. Overhanging roofs soften the structures’ profile, grounding and integrating them into the landscape. Gardens and shaded outdoor spaces invite residents to connect with the tropical climate.  

At the center of the project, a shared well-being space has been designed to foster connection. This space includes a sizable natural swimming pool, a yoga pavilion, an open-air gym, a shared kitchen, and a dining area. Next to the pool is an organic garden which yields produce and provides a natural play area for the children. This design encourages the residents to live mindfully within their community. It is lovely to see how all this philosophy has been brought to life in the actual design of this Bali development.

It’s no secret that Bali currently faces a lot of environmental challenges. From water scarcity, waste management, and loss of biodiversity. These problems are at the forefront of the Kaba-Kaba Project’s design. I can see the key initiatives to tackle those challenges at the heart of the design. From locally sourced materials and artisans, to passive design strategies for energy efficiency, the design is calculated and harbours a belief that a better world is possible. If we all help, together we can move mountains!

Located in Tabanan, the Kaba-Kaba Project lies in an area where serene rice fields and coconut groves are abundant. Life there moves at a slower pace. Yet, the urban conveniences are close: with Canggu only 20 minutes away. Design Assembly envisioned that this development could be a blueprint for Bali’s future. By prioritizing sustainability, community, and timeless design, Kaba-Kaba Project invites its residents to live in harmony with Bali’s culture and environment.
