Ameline Beauty & Spa proves that a great interior makes everything feel better — including the treatment.
Canggu is full of beauty spots. They come and go, rise and fall with the rental cycle, and many of them look roughly the same: white walls, rattan accents, a neon sign somewhere near the entrance. So when a place opens that genuinely stops you — that makes you look up, look around, and actually take in the space you’re in — it’s worth noting. Ameline Beauty & Spa, tucked just off Jalan Padang Linjong, is one of those places.
Designed by Nitkala Arsitek and opened in 2023, Ameline is a salon and spa built around a genuinely considered spatial idea — and you feel it from the moment you step inside. This isn’t decoration for the sake of it. The architecture is doing real work here.
The Space
The first thing you notice is the light. A striking triangular clerestory roof — glazed to let the sky in — floods the interior with sunlight in a way that feels almost theatrical. It shifts through the day, catching the texture of the stone walls, pooling on the floor, and moving with the hours. In a building dedicated to beauty, it turns out the best thing you can do is let in as much natural light as possible.
Then there’s the tree. A living tree, growing right through the centre of the building — roots in the ground, canopy reaching toward the glass above. It’s the kind of design move that sounds conceptual until you’re standing in front of it, and then it just feels inevitable. Of course there should be a tree here! Of course the building should be built around it!
The stone walls add weight and texture — grounding the space without making it heavy. Tropical ambiance is a phrase that gets overused in Bali, but Ameline earns it: this is genuinely a building in conversation with its environment, not one that’s simply decorated to look like it is.
The View You Don’t Expect.
What makes Ameline particularly interesting is its location. Padang Linjong is busy — central Canggu busy, which means scooters, construction, the usual organised chaos. And yet somehow, the property opens out onto rice fields. A quiet, green, unhurried view that feels like a reward for finding the place. It’s the kind of contrast that Bali still manages to produce in its best pockets: the world rushing past just outside, and inside, something that feels completely apart from all of it.
Why the Design Matters
A salon is a specific kind of space. You’re there to be looked after — to hand yourself over, briefly, to someone else’s care. Ameline understands that the design is part of the service. The light, the materiality, the tree, the view — these aren’t incidental. They are an intrinsic part of the experience.
Nitkala Arsitek has built something here that respects both its users and its location — which, in a part of Bali that moves as fast as Canggu does, is genuinely rare. Ameline opened in 2023 and already feels like it’s been here forever. That’s always the sign of a building that got it right.
