CAFES & RESTAURANTS
Salumeria Tanah Barak, although brand new and hidden away from the main road of Batu Bolong, demonstrates that Canggu has grown up. People will talk about before and after.
Tanah Barak is the turning point where Canggu went from a beachy-surfy village into a sophisticated and upmarket town.
This Salumeria could be found on Forte Dei Marmi or Positano. A Salumeria is a place where you find Salamis, Prosciuttos, cold meats and a variety of cheeses. The fact that Tanah Barak has a retail side, where you can purchase all of the above, plus, olive oils and bread, makes it a very dangerous place for my meager budget!
The style of the restaurant is cool, coastal but at the same time urban. It has a very European feel with a Melbourne touch.
The Chef and owner Geoff Lindsay, originally from Melbourne, really brings his personal style to it. Tanah Barak is masculine and cool, the only artwork on the walls are beautiful photographs from Mornington Peninsula, where Lindsay owns a house; is a steady reminder of where his heart and home lies.
The royal blue main sofa that hugs the restaurant is hand made, the small sofa chairs were also hand made in Bali. The cutlery is made out of mother of pearl, the fabric napkins are all made especially for Salumeria. The staff wears leather aprons that are reminiscent of a butcher’s apron but with a modern twist.
There is a lot of attention to detail in this place. The stools are black metal wire and wood, the lightness of the wiring giving the restaurant space and light. The wooden parts of the stool match perfectly with the color of the sand in the photographs, and the wire structure of the stools and tables correlate to the wired lampshades.
Tanah Barak is perfect for an afternoon Martini with Spuntine
(the Italian version of Tapas) and a side of olives. Finishing it off with a Tiramisu. Mmmmmm.
