STORES
I was driving past Jl Basangkasa in Seminyak when I saw Souq for the first time. I stopped my scooter immediately as my instinct told me I really needed to check this place out. From the outside, I wasn’t sure if it was a cafe or a store. It turns out it’s both.
This store has an air of grandiose that is difficult to achieve. The store is huge, with high ceilings and an enormous variety of products. From bedsheets to kids’ clothing, to cashmere, to shoes to tableware.Â
It is one of those places that gets me so excited when I enter that I don’t know where to start my exploration. Everything I picked up, I wanted to purchase. It’s a terrible place if you are on a budget as you will want to buy clothing, fabrics and kid’s room decorations!
The store is owned by Interior and Furniture Designer (and originally a Fashion Designer) Peter Kempt and wife Sophie Gargett. Sophie does the buying and Peter the product design. Both from Australia they moved to Bali about 4 years ago.
All the brands that are in the store are Bali-based brands that sell internationally. They stock KID, Alexander & Fox, Bedouin, Em & Lu, Jaclin Chouchana, Feiyue, Kevala, Stage of Georgia, Salty’s, Young Byers and so much more.
But don’t forget that Souq is also a coffee store. The stools, chairs and tables are all designed by Kempt and can be produced for other people. The textures of the back wall combine with the woven patterns of the stools and chairs, and the bare concrete floor works beautifully. According to an Italian friend of mine, Souq has the best coffee on the island.Â
With the quality of products they have in the store, it doesn’t surprise me that the quality of the coffee will match it. Souq – strong on taste and deliciously chic.
