The mere mention of ‘Bali’ conjures images of pristine beaches, cascading rice paddies, and a vibrant culture steeped in tradition. In the middle of it, lies a hidden gem – Red Gunpowder, a Bali restaurant that expertly blends the rustic vibes of a European chalet with the fiery spirit of Indian cuisine.
Stepping off the bustling street and into the restaurant’s grounds feels like entering a secret garden. Greenery enveloped the path leading towards the main building, a two-story wooden structure with an undeniable chalet-esque charm. Built in 2021, it radiated a warmth beyond its years that instantly drew me in.
The architects at grundesign.studio, along with designer Joshua Criado, deserve a standing ovation for capturing the essence of a European escape in the heart of Bali. The reclaimed wood facade and the red lighting cast a warm, mysterious glow throughout the space. Stepping inside, the contrast between rustic elegance and modern sophistication becomes even more apparent. Exposed wood beams crisscross the high ceilings, creating a sense of openness, while contemporary furnishings offer a comfortable and stylish haven.
But the true star of the show was the outside terrace. Bathed in the soft glow of fairy lights, it transported me straight to a quaint European cafe. It was the perfect spot to unwind with a pre-dinner cocktail, taking in the vibrant energy of the place.
Red Gunpowder isn’t just about stunning design; it is a culinary experience that’s as explosive as its namesake. Under the masterful guidance of Executive Chef Chris John Smith and Head Chef Muhamad Jaelani Sidik, the restaurant presents a menu that celebrates the fiery passion of Indian cuisine.
My taste buds embarked on a journey that began with the Tandoor Octopus. Perfectly cooked, the succulent flesh held a hint of smokiness, a testament to the expertise of the tandoor chefs. This was followed by the Biryani, a fragrant ode to saffron and basmati rice, generously studded with tender meat. The explosions of flavor continued with the Lamb Ribs, a symphony of caramelised spices and melt-in-your-mouth tenderness.
But the undisputed star of the show was the Butter Chicken. This classic Indian dish, often misunderstood, was here elevated to an art form. The creamy tomato gravy, infused with the right amount of spice, clung perfectly to the succulent chicken pieces. It was a dish that both comforted and surprised, a testament to the chef’s understanding of balance and nuance.
Red Gunpowder caters to both the adventurous palate and the romantic soul. The beautiful terrace, with its red lighting and European charm, provides an idyllic setting for a cozy date night. But the restaurant equally welcomes groups of friends looking to share a culinary adventure.
While the entire menu is a testament to culinary artistry, I highly recommend trying the Tandoor Octopus and the Butter Chicken. Additionally, don’t miss out on the opportunity to soak in the beauty of the outside terrace.
