One Rug At a Time

You never realize just how much a rug can make or break a room until you hit the carpet jackpot and get it oh-so-right. Between figuring out the right size for your space, and narrowing down the pattern and texture that appeals most to you and your aesthetic, picking a rug can be a time-consuming activity—but the beauty of it is how wonderfully a gorgeous rug can tie a space together.

Rugs are much more than trivial elements — they are used to communicate and zone areas in an open floor plan, where the furniture can often look lost or disconnected without them.

When you’re choosing a new living room rug, confirm it fits your seating area by measuring.
The rug need to be large enough to cover a conversation area, with the front legs of your sofa and chairs on the rug to anchor the space. Rug designs are so versatile that you can mix one that you love with any decor style, as long as the colour is right.

Bathrooms have become a lot more fun to decorate in recent years. No longer restricted to matchy-matchy tile work and terry cloth towels, it’s now common to add fresh potted plants, real fabric shower curtains, artwork, and yes, even real rugs to the bathroom.

The layering rug look has become very popular in the last few years, and it’s a great way to have fun with textures and styles. But it’s important to get it right and fully consider your space before you layer. A fun, bold colour looks great over a more neutral choice like a jute or wool rug and allows you to cover more area without overpowering the space. Next are a few rugs trends that we are gushing over!

Kilim Rug

One of our favourites is Kilim rugs: these rugs have long been at the front of design trends, and for good reason.

Originating from Turkey, North Africa, and the Balkans, and known for their rich history and even richer colours, these flat weave rugs are bold, beautiful and timeless. A gorgeous Kilim such as this is a great way to add colour to a wood-heavy living space or to brighten up a guest bedroom.

Ikat Rug

Ikat rug designs feature a characteristic “blurriness,” a result of the extreme difficulty that traditional Indonesian hand-weavers had in creating perfect patterns using the dyed yarns in their rugs. This blurriness came to be seen not as a flaw, but as a defining feature of Ikat rugs. Now that pattern is making a comeback in modern interior design.

Jute Rug

Jute rugs make a splash due to their simplicity and affordability. Made from 100% natural jute fibres, these rugs are environmentally friendly and inexpensive thanks to the renewable resource of jute plant fibres. We’re lucky that Jute rugs can be find easily around the island.
Jute rugs add a warm, earthy statement to your room. Its chunky weave creates amazing texture and when placed in a low-traffic area, such as a bedroom, these natural rugs can last for many years.

Moroccan Rug

Moroccan rugs have distinctive designs, which range from ordered geometric shapes to more free-form, expressive patterns. They are almost always in a neutral palette (usually with an ivory background with brown or black geometric lines), and they have a shaggy pile.

This rug is timeless because it gives any room, particularly a cold modern room, warmth and patina as well as a dose of ethnicity and versatility.

5 Things to Consider When Choosing a New Rug

1. Size: Make sure your rug has the right scale for your room.

2. Color: Your new rug looks best if it features at least two of your accent colors.

3. Comfort: Choose a rug you love, but it’s also important that it feels good underfoot.

4. Care: Check the cleaning and maintenance of any rug you are considering.

5. Style: The good news is that nearly all rug styles are almost neutral — color is more important than pattern.

Laying down a single piece of fabric has the potential to completely transform a space. Rugs can take a room from cavernous to cozy, from disconnected to designed.
Every decorator knows just how important a rug can be. We think of it as a huge piece of art.
