Gili Air, a tiny island paradise in Indonesia, has always been on my travel bucket list. I wasn’t just seeking turquoise waters and swaying palm trees; I craved an escape that was both luxurious and immersive. Enter Kalyana Villa and Retreat.

Amy explained that during peak season, many families came to Gili Air, so the decision was made to expand the rooms across the three buildings. This thoughtful expansion ensured Kalyana could cater to both couples and larger groups, without sacrificing the sense of tranquility.
Stepping inside any of Kalyana’s villas was like stepping into a living piece of art. The furniture, decorations, even the carvings that adorned the walls – it was clear that nothing here was mass-produced. Every piece was lovingly created on-site by skilled artisans. This meticulous attention to detail blew me away. It was a truly immersive experience, transporting me to a world steeped in cultural richness.
The sprawling 800 square meters of land Kalyana sits on felt like a private sanctuary. Waking up to the gentle sound of waves lapping at the shore, knowing I had this vast space to unwind in, was pure bliss. Whether I was soaking up the sun by the pool or gathering with loved ones in the communal areas, Kalyana offers the perfect balance of intimacy and freedom.
Kalyana wasn’t just about the luxurious amenities. It offered a unique opportunity to delve into Javanese culture in the epicenter of the East Indonesian archipelago. The Joglo houses themselves showcase traditional construction techniques and design elements. The ceilings, for example, were made from bamboo, but not the ubiquitous bedeg common in Bali. Instead, Kalyana opted for a more natural look. The sturdy columns throughout the villas were crafted from bangkirai wood, known for its strength and beautiful reddish-brown hue. Witnessing the craftsmanship that went into creating this stunning retreat provided a deeper appreciation for the archipelago’s heritage.
