From 13 to 17 August, Bali’s most considered design festival moves to the beachfront at Pengembak, Sanur, under a theme that feels genuinely urgent. Here’s why it’s worth your time.
Jia CURATED has become something genuinely rare in Bali’s cultural calendar: a design event that actually means something. Not a trade fair with aspirations, not a pop-up dressed as a cultural moment, but a five-day gathering rooted in a clear and honest belief that design is better when it’s made in dialogue, with other makers, with other disciplines, and with the place it inhabits. The 2026 edition, which runs from 13 to 17 August at Pengembak Beach in Sanur, is its most ambitious yet, and the reason is largely in the setting.
Jia CURATED has outgrown its previous home. The previous two editions at the abandoned Bali Festival Park were extraordinary in their own way, raw and atmospheric, with exhibitors responding to decay and overgrowth in ways that made for some of the most memorable installations in recent memory. This year the landscape shifts completely: 15,000 square metres of beachfront, framed by pine trees and coastal mangroves on Bali’s eastern shoreline, open to both sunrise and sunset. The event’s co-founders describe the site not as a venue, but as a collaborator. Reading the curatorial statement by Budiman Ong, you believe them.
The Theme: Nature Weave
The 2026 theme is Nature Weave, and it’s clearly worth taking seriously, rather than reading as the kind of vague sustainability gesture that often gets attached to events for optics only. What Budiman Ong articulates in his curatorial statement is more specific and more interesting than that: a reframing of design as a practice of coexistence, created not just for people but in dialogue with the landscapes and ecosystems we’re part of. The question he poses, how do we design not only for ourselves but for the larger systems of which we are a part, is one the built environment is going to be grappling with for a long time. JIA Curated 2026 is one of the more serious attempts to address it through actual making rather than conversation.
The Pengembak Beach site is not incidental to this. Its shifting light, coastal wind, the river that connects one side to the other, these aren’t features to build around. They’re conditions that actively shape the experience, and exhibitors have been invited to respond to them directly. Anchored in the Indonesian principle of Gotong Royong, collective effort and mutual cooperation, the event positions curation as an ecosystem of shared creative energy rather than a showcase of individual achievement.
The Exhibitors Worth Watching
Over 250 participating brands across Indonesian and international design make this the biggest edition to date, after 2025’s 150 brands and 12,000 visitors. I think a few installations from the program stand out particularly.
STVMP’s MetalLab is one I’m most curious about: an experimental design environment where industrial remnants, recycled materials, and speculative ideas become collectible objects, part laboratory, part archive, part workshop. Blancostudio x Kalpa Taru Bali are presenting an interactive pavilion built from raw teak slabs and timber offcuts, with a living canopy growing gradually into the structure over the course of the event. Post+Beam is presenting design as a living system through a modular aluminium weave designed to reconfigure without waste. And ONG CEN KUANG, one of Bali’s finest handcrafted lighting ateliers (and one we feature at BI Design House), is unveiling their inaugural outdoor collection Janur, woven into the surrounding landscape rather than placed within it.
Lamitak, the Main Partner, presents The Intelligence of Surfaces in collaboration with DDAP Architect, an immersive exhibition exploring how material thinking can shape spaces that are beautiful, conscious, and built to last. The living installation by Living Designs Bali x Nawangseta, with its slow falling water, hundred traditional Balinese Topeng Buduh masks, and sand compressed to embody both strength and fragility, is the kind of work that earns JIA Curated its reputation as something much more than a design fair.
The Program
Architecture in Scale returns for its second year, curated by Charmaine Chan, Design Editor at the South China Morning Post. This year it features maquettes from 25 practices including Kengo Kuma & Associates, Andra Matin, Bensley, Alexis Dornier, and IBUKU, responding to the Nature Weave theme through biophilia and the ways architecture can reconnect us with living systems. There’s a public curator’s tour on 15 August from 2 to 3.30pm, which I’d book ahead.
The 360 Degree Design Dialogues talks program, curated by Design Anthology, brings keynote speakers including Bethan Laura Wood, Peter Stutchbury, and Fiona Lynch, alongside panellists Kwangho Lee, Cheng Tsung Feng, and Gabriel Tan. It runs on the Main Stage each afternoon. Evening sessions give way to live music and cultural performances at sundown, with food and drink through till 10pm each night.
New for 2026 is Project Benih, an initiative pairing nine designers from Indonesia, Japan, and Taiwan with Indonesian artisans and manufacturers, with the collaborations developed during the event and presented at JIA Curated 2027 before touring internationally. The name means seed in Indonesian, and the spirit behind it is exactly right: planting ideas and relationships rather than just displaying finished work. There’s also a Spotlight on the Philippines this year through Tomorrow, curated by Gabriel Lichauco of NEWFOLK, weaving indigenous knowledge systems and contemporary Filipino design thinking into a single exhibition.
And Waste to Wonder 2.0 returns, repurposing materials from previous editions into functional elements across the venue. Tyvek exhibition roofing becoming patio umbrellas, fabric offcuts becoming cushion fill, Lamitak packaging crates becoming seating. Small gestures that add up to a consistent argument about what responsible exhibition-making actually looks like.
Why It Matters
Bali has a complicated relationship with design right now. The island is producing some of the most interesting work in Southeast Asia, while simultaneously being built over at a pace that makes the idea of design in dialogue with nature feel increasingly difficult to sustain. JIA Curated doesn’t pretend that tension doesn’t exist. It makes it the subject. And it does so through actual creative work, which is the only way that kind of conversation produces anything worth having.
For our community, architects, designers, developers, and design enthusiasts who take this island seriously, this is the event on the August calendar. Five days, a beachfront setting that will produce some extraordinary installations, talks from some of the region’s most compelling voices, and an evening program that makes it worth staying late.
