Some villas have a presence, a feeling. Bagheera definitely does.
Tucked beside a quiet river in Pererenan, Bagheera is the kind of place that feels hidden in all the right ways. When we arrived to shoot our villa tour, what immediately stood out wasn’t the size or the view, it was the contrast. The deep black of the shou sugi ban exterior, standing tall against all that green.
I’ve seen a lot of beautiful villas, but I don’t often see this quality of finishes here in Bali. Shou sugi ban, a Japanese method of preserving wood by charring it, gives the home this strong, grounded feeling. It’s bold and tactile and instantly makes you slow down. But what I really love is how that dark exterior sets the tone for what’s inside.
Stepping through the doors, everything shifts. Warm browns, softer textures, handmade finishes, it’s like the whole house exhales. There’s a beautiful rhythm here between light and dark, rough and smooth. It’s minimalist, sure, but not cold. Every surface feels considered, but still lived-in.
The layout is thoughtful. The communal spaces flow easily around the pool and garden, while the bedrooms give you that feeling of retreat and privacy. And tucked in between it all; a sauna, ice bath, and a little gym. Wellness, but without shouting about it.
As we moved through the space on our villa tour, it didn’t feel like I was documenting a showpiece. It felt like I was telling a story. A calm, quiet one. That black timber cladding makes its statement, but it’s the contrast that makes Bagheera feel special. The way it gives way to honey-toned wood and soft morning light is remarkable.
If you ask me, the real magic of this place isn’t just in how it looks, it’s in how it holds you. That mix of design confidence and ease. In this way it invites you to slow down and just be.
