BEYOND BORDERS

After being in Bali for a while, finding a store that has its own point of view and offers unique furniture and style can often seem impossible. And that's why Beyond Borders is incredibly refreshing. Beyond Borders fills the gap in unique homewares and furniture design for Hamptons style and Rustic Chic design lovers.

Beyond Borders furnishes their huge two storey flagship store with grace and ease. There's no filler, or generic pieces here, each product fits their aesthetic perfectly. Yet the incredible feature about Beyond Borders is that they create and produce everything in the store themselves. Thus they have complete control over the design and manufacturing process. This ability to create their own unique products makes exploring their store like finding a rare gem.

The downstairs area is dedicated to the home. From the bedroom, through the kitchen, and into the living area. You can completely furnish your whole house impeccably. In addition,  they stock the pillow cases, throws, frames, candles, trays, art, bedside lamps, vases, placemats, candleholders, rugs, baskets (and so much more) that enable you to dress your home to your heart's content. I can easily picture myself living in the Hamptons and  having a sea-front mansion fully furnished and decorated by Beyond Borders. Ok, maybe a bit of wishful thinking, but swap the Hamptons for Canggu and now we're talking!

Upstairs, Beyond Borders have created one of the best kids furniture stores I have ever seen.

First of all, any kid walking into that store would not want to leave. They have the coolest indoor treehouse. I'm almost too scared to take my kids there as I know they will want one for my house and probably come home terribly disappointed with their current bedroom situation.

Everything in the kids floor, I wanted. EVERYTHING. Seriously, they have the cutest things. Finally, a place where you can walk in and say I want this bed, or this set of shelves, or this desk, or these chairs or this kids table. I'll  take one of everything!

But there's more, I'm also taking about their cool baskets, rugs, wall hangers (I have my eye on one), the wooden toys, and the soft toys. They have the cutest animal shaped wooden lights, clocks and wooden puzzles. They also have sweet paintings of animals to decorate the kids room and gorgeous animal shape placemats. I also loved their woven stool in the shape of a turtle. Total Cute overload!

Beyond Borders has changed the Bali furnishing game.

With a strong aesthetic and a defined point of view, Beyond Borders offers gorgeous quality homewares. This store will be your new go-to place not only when looking to shop for your home, but also as a great place to shop for kids and grown up gifts.

THE JUNGLE TRADER

Jungle trader is only a few months old but it’s already making its mark on the Canggu interiors world.

Bali Interiors- Jungle Trader

A double front, single storey building allows this shop to fully express itself and have an identity of its own without having to compromise space in any way.

Bali Interiors- The Jungle Trader Canggu

As the name suggests, Jungle Trader is very Jungle-y but the concept of the store is engaging - taking you in on a trip around the world.
Their interiors transport you through the Sumatran Jungle, into the depths of the African Savannah and finish  on a Indian ocean sailboat voyage.

The store is divided into three different sections. The left hand side is where the beautiful Indigo fabrics are, and the nautical theme flourishes. where you can find stunning brass crabs and mermaids. The middle section is where the central round table is displaying the smaller objects, such as clay and wooden plates, shells, feathers, necklaces and so much more. Then there is the third area where a beautiful big recycled wood table sits on a stunning seagrass rug. The table is beautifully styled with large rattan bowls and basses, divine cushions, wooden statues, wooden cow bells and lots of greenery. Behind this large table there is a glass cabinet filled with one of my favourite things, Ceramics.  What I love about these ceramics is that they are a particular shade of green that goes beautifully with the rainforest theme of the store.

Saying that there are three sections is actually simplifying the whole concept. Because the reality is, is that there are so many sections and nooks that makes this store interesting and incredibly addictive. Ok, first of all, the clothes. I love them!! The beautiful linen shirts and shorts are super chic and perfect for Bali weather. The t-shirts are excellent quality and have a great cut. And there are also dresses, scarfs and many more goodies. There is also a leather section with suitcases and weekend bags. It’s worth mentioning that they stock the bags of the year, the small rattan mini bags that every person seems to needing. They also have really cute tigger soft toys that I kinda (actually I really do) want for myself. And if that wasn’t enough they also stock sunglasses and jewellery.

The selection of pillows and throws are beautiful and unique. The artwork on the many walls is distinctive and i haven’t seen it anywhere else before. And once again, the themes in the art vary, from african, to marine, jungley and even Japanese.

After a while in Bali you feel like you have seen it all, but The Jungle Trader has made a point in having a different aesthetic, stocking on trend but unique products while staying true to their core.

ISHA NATURALS

Over a year ago, when I moved to Bali, I began frequenting The Samadi Sunday markets in Canggu. There was a stall that I could never go past without stopping. They sold the most beautiful all natural body-care products. The creator was always there, asking me to try their new products, and many times giving them to me for free to try at home and give her feedback. Well, I’m so happy to know that she has opened her flagship store in no other than Batu Bolong, Canggu. And I am so exited to be chosen to showcase it in Bali Interiors before anyone else!

Lets just start by saying, what a start for a first store! The space is flawless. A black and white theme runs through the store. The white and black diamond shaped tiles on the floors in combination with the black and white walls creates a striking and clean, and almost clinical aesthetic, that goes incredibly well with their whole concept. What I thought were all subway white tiles on the walls, are in actual fact white brick with individual hand painted black lines in between the bricks, creating an amazing result! There is one detail that I absolutely loved about this store which is the ceramic white sink in the middle of the back wall. Perfect for trying all the products and then being able to wash your hands. In the middle of the shop there is a white table where you can find all of the hand bar soaps, which you are going to go crazy for like me and will want to buy one of each!

One word - merchandise. A-mazing! Not only is the way it has been displayed absolutely insane, the actual products labels, bottles, containers, etc. are all delightful! The minimalist and orderly approach to merchandise works extremely well, adding a visual appeal to the store that makes you want to buy at least one of each of the products.

So what can you find at ISHA Naturals? First of all, all natural ingredients, no chemicals whatsoever! They offer beautiful hand soaps-by the way- seriously amazing! Liquid soaps, facial masks, hair masks, skin oils, diffusers, body butters, body scrubs, aromatherapy, all natural candles, even washing clothing soap!

ISHA is the store that was missing in Canggu. Now, we no longer need to go overseas to find beautiful body care products. Please do yourself a favour and go and check out this store, like me you will be back for more and more.

BALI BOAT SHED

It's hard to miss Bali Boat Shed. It's colourful and distinctive front is reminiscent of the famous Port Phillip Bay foreshore, and has become iconic in Bali shopping.

The exterior is an experience in itself. The array of bright colours and patterns and all the pot plants at the front of each little "hut" makes BBS irresistible and inviting.

The interior, as you would expect, is filled with multi-coloured clothing and swimwear for men and women. There is a huge lightbox with hundreds of sunglasses to try on. There is also a beautiful hat display, which doubles as one of the windows.

The beauty of BBS' interior design reveals itself when you look up. The ceilings have a local flavour with their use of Balinese architecture and materials. Traditional fishing boats hang upside down and are used as a base for a new kind of chandelier, holding funky multi-sized and shaped lightbulbs. On the other ceilings you find carefully-ordered hanging lightbulbs attached with thick rope. The display of paddle boards, all individually hand painted, brings light and colour to the store.

The feeling inside Bali Boat Shed is relaxed, surfy and coastal. The change rooms continue the rope and lightbulbs theme and are painted inside with tropical drawings and summery pastels. There are also paddle boards resting against the walls near the big mirrors.

Bali Boat Shed is a great shopping destination and worth checking out for the interior and exterior design. Just be warned - you probably will end up poorer when you leave than when you walked in the doors!

KIM SOO

I was on location, shooting other places, when all of a sudden I ran into this store. I was gobsmacked. Had I arrived on interiors heaven?

I saw the Kim Soo sign at the front and it all made sense.

Kim Soo is decorated exactly to my taste.... if I knew how to restrain myself and choose black and white as a colour palette. The terrace area at the front is impeccable. The black and white tiles match the monochromatic wire chairs, while the wooden and black tables create a great contrast against the white concrete wall that also becomes a bench. The only plants are beautiful frangipani trees. The bareness and minimalist decor of it all is simply perfection. And that's just outside.

Once you go inside you literally don't know where to look first and start your exploration. The shop is large. Although it contains an enormous amount of stock, it doesn't feel crowded. There are tables and tables filled with the most divine treasures, such as shells, coral, china jars, glass lamps, beaded boxes, handmade necklaces, candles, wooden objects, and marble crosses. I wanted EVERYTHING!! Once I was able to catch my breath and realise I wasn't dreaming, I saw there were also amazing things on the walls, like divine fabrics, exquisite cushions, beautiful baskets and bedding and so much more.

The two areas outside follow the terrace at the front. Somehow this store is more than a store. You can see that a lot of thought has been put into this store. It feels like a home. A very very stylish one. At the back of KIM SOO there is a swimming pool, and following the white concrete walls there are only three pot plants, one with a large cactus, that sit against it. The stark contrast is ultra chic. The store has a very european feel. It's so photogenic, you could be in Santorini or Ibiza.

And if this heavenly place wasn't enough to satisfy you, it also has a coffee shop attached to it! KIM SOO has answered my interior design prayers and has created a store accordingly. Amen.

MISTER ZIMI

Even though I don't know what Mister Zimi is, the store welcomes me in. Now that I'm in, I can see that Mister Zimi is a clothing brand based in Bali. Now with stores across Australia, Zimi has created its own identity and a huge international following. While their ranges are on a smaller scale, Mister Zimi is well-loved by women of all ages and sizes.

The interior design of the shop represents the brand beautifully. They have a feature wall at the back of the store, where the cash register is, and it's a print, just like you would see on one of their dresses. And really that's all you need. The side walls are occupied by the clothing which are all prints, so you don't need much more than that without overwhelming the space.

They have played with proportions really well. In the middle of one side, there is a huge mirror that leans on the wall. On the other side, also in the middle, there are two sofa chairs that create a tropical vibe, and a single tall gorgeous leafy plant that they have put on a stool to create even more height to it.

The floor is compose of large concrete tiles with an enormous round rug in the middle of the shop

This place is well-thought out. All these disproportionally big and tall objects give the illusion of a high ceiling and a large space. Combined with the simplicity of the fit out and open space, they have created a store that makes you feel relaxed, shows the personality of their brand clearly and make you want to try every single thing on.

BUNGALOW LIVING

Bungalow Living draws you in. The side statues with their orange dandelion necklaces, the baskets, the wooden couch, all whisper sweet music to my ears. As soon as I come in, the first thing I see in front of me is a gorgeous round table with an open book, a little statue, a candle, a beautiful vase with gorgeous flowers. The table is right in the middle of a white mandala that has been painted on the concrete floor. Most walls are exposed brick, except for the front one which is made out of concrete.

Everything is so well thought out, so beautifully styled. It's magic.

Bungalow living is the sort of place that makes you wish you had a new house that needed all sort of new soft furnishing. You would purchase all sorts of pillows, blankets, beautiful round rugs, and little knick knacks to decorate your dream home and some incense to add a wonderful smell. Bungalow Living makes a lot of their own products, including notebooks, wrapping paper, cushion covers and lamps among other things. They source the rest of the products from all over the world, from India to Morocco to Africa and different parts of Indonesia.

Bungalow has become kind of an institution in Bali as they not only do retail but also wholesale.

Now the only question is, should I move house or start a shop?

SOUQ

I was driving past Jl Basangkasa in Seminyak when I saw Souq for the first time. I stopped my scooter immediately as my instinct told me I really needed to check this place out. From the outside I wasn’t sure if it was a cafe or a store. It turns out it’s both.

This store has an air of grandiose that is difficult to achieve. The store is huge, with high ceilings and an enormous variety of products. From bed sheets, to kids clothing, to cashmere, to shoes to tableware.

It is one of those places that gets me so excited when I enter that I don’t know where to start my exploration. Everything I picked up, I wanted to purchase. It’s a terrible place if you are on a budget as you will want to buy clothing, fabrics and kid’s room decorations!

The store is owned by Interior and Furniture Designer (and originally a Fashion Designer) Peter Kempt and wife Sophie Gargett. Sophie does the buying and Peter the product design. Both from Australia they moved to Bali about 4 years ago.
All the brands that are in the store are Bali-based brands that sell internationally. They stock KID, Alexander & Fox, Bedouin, Em & Lu, Jaclin Chouchana, Feiyue, Kevala, Stage of Georgia, Salty’s, Young Byers and so much more.

But don’t forget that Souq is also a coffee store. The stools, chairs and tables are all designed by Kempt and can be produced for other people. The textures of the back wall combines with the woven patterns of the stools and chairs, and the bare concrete floor works beautifully. According to an Italian friend of mine, Souq has the best coffee on the island.

With the quality of products they have in the store, it doesn’t surprise me that the quality of coffee will match it. Souq – strong on taste and deliciously chic.
