ROB PEETOOM BALI INTERIORS

Going to a Hair Salon in a shopping mall probably wouldn’t be my first choice. But if all hair salons looked as good as Rob Peetoom, then I wouldn’t choose to go anywhere else.

Located at Beach Walk in Kuta and overlooking the beautiful greenery in the centre of the mall, Peetoom keeps the same architecture motif as its headquarters in Petitenget

A sleek, minimalist and monochrome interior continues the Peetoom thread, making its mark and establishing his brand as the top hair salons in Bali.

The hair salon is divided into 3. The reception and barber shop at the front, the main hair spa in the central area and the back of the salon, which actually is the best part, is the massage and hair treatments area.

The back area has been designed to give you the Petitenget experience (read here), the large all encompassing glass windows that overlook the hanging gardens, make you feel like you are looking at the rice fields in Seminyak. Laying there you feel completely relaxed, soon  forgetting you are inside a Kuta Shopping mall.

The designers have done an excellent job to make this salon an experience to remember. And if there was such a thing as “Best Interiors for a Hair Salon at a mall”, Peetoom would take first price by a mile!

THE ROOTS

It certainly seems like the latest fashion for men is barber shops.

The great thing for us is that they have made quite a significant effort to make them look super stylish.

One place in particular that caught my attention is The Roots. Sitting pretty next to Milk & Madu, this barbershop fits perfectly with Canggu’s Hipster scene.

Their exposed brick wall, sets the underground look. The big industrial lamps and the old school barber chairs perfectly complement the style of the barber shop. The other walls have been tiled with a black border at the bottom and the rest in white subway tiles.

The small touches such as the coke machine, the framed pictures on the wall and the old fashioned wall lamps, create a warm but casual atmosphere. And the good news is that The Roots is a chain so you can find it in Surabaya, Jakarta and other Indonesian cities.

CAFES & RESTAURANTS

SHEARLOCK

When I imagine a man cave, Shearlock is probably the closest thing that comes to mind. It’s in a bit of hidden spot, with a dark and sombre interior, and mysterious doors that lead towards the unknown.

Upon entering I feel like a bit awkward for a moment (a lone female in this manly space). But after entering the café, I am greeted by a very friendly barista and all my preconceived notions come crumbling down.

Shearlock is a café, a retail shop, a barber and at night, a bar opens upstairs. It’s not a huge space so I’m impressed that they were able to make it all work. The barbershop is at the front and it looks like a barber from Westworld, the only thing missing is a place to tie your horse to at the front of the shop. I can seriously imagine a cowboy pushing through those wooden saloon doors!

The café is more modern but keeps the very masculine aesthetic, lots of concrete, wood and black metal stools. Although the décor is minimal and austere, it doesn’t feel cold. The retail space on the left hand side gives an urban and modern touch as it displays cool denim and leather backpacks and man bags as well as t-shirts and other trinkets.

Upstairs is the bar. There’s a long and narrow space with a leather-like sofa bench that sits along the right hand side, making good use of the space. At the end of the area is the bar itself. The Shearlock bar continues the sombre aesthetic but I can imagine it comes alive at night with the chatter and laughter of not just men, but their female companions as well.

LEMON NAILS

It seems like Nail spas are the new trend in Both Bali and around the world. I love seeing how much effort they put into making these spaces unique. Lemon Nails is no different.

Visiting Lemon Nails feels like entering another time and space. With its electric blue colour wall, it immediately transports me to Frida Kahlo’s house in Mexico City. The portraits of women dressed up with lots of flowers in their heads make me think that my initial association is not just a coincidence. But they have gone way beyond Kahlo for inspiration and taken the rest of the space to into art deco direction.

The spa is very seductive, lush and indulgent. The large rattan and suede-like sofas in combination with the large brass frame mirrors and the gold leaf-esque bowls for having your feet washed make you feel like Khalessi - getting pampered like a total queen while your dragons wait outside.

The ceiling (I’m always looking up!) is joglo style with an interesting light fixture adorning it. The nail spa also has a Juice Bar that also sells really good coffee. Breakfast and nails anyone? The Juice bar continues with those rattan elements and the brass fixtures in a very light way so not to overwhelm the space.

Lemon nails brings something totally different to the table and is definitely worth checking if visiting Canggu.

SOFIA SPA

Sofia Spa is a gorgeous little Spa in Pantai Berawa. Specialising in organic waxing, massages and facials, they use the newest technology to make your skin glow and delay the ageing process.

Sofia Spa is like a heavenly tree house as it’s located above Pomelo Café. Upon entering, you are greeted with lots of greenery, a super comfy sofa with lots of delicious textured pillows, and a round white and natural seagrass rug. It feels like stepping into a friend’s house and I want to get cosy and have a cup of tea. But before I can get too comfortable, they whisk me up to see the rooms. Once I step inside, the first thing that I notice is a huge beautiful bamboo mirror that takes up the whole wall and sets the tone of boho-beach house. All of the 3 rooms maintain that bohemian feeling. One is all white and natural, the second one is white with turquoise accents and the third one is white with touches of black. They all have macramé wall hangers, small bamboo mirrors and sweet little baskets that compliment the style and colour of each room.

The reception area, which is downstairs, keeps the boho style but it adds a lot of lux to it. The cement black and white tiles and the contrasting black back wall, in combination with the white large frame mirror, make a great statement and create a chic first impression.

BALI INTERIOR ROB PEETOOM VIEW

When I first came to Bali, I remember driving along Jalan Petitenget and seeing the Rob Peetoom sign. I used to look for it as a landmark to make sure I was going the right way. I always had a feeling it was going to be a beautiful Hair Spa but it was only this year that I found out how beautiful it really is.

Getting your hair done in Bali can often be hit or miss. I had tried a few places and walked out disappointed each time. Finally, after a few great recommendations from trusted friends, I decided to try Rob Peetoom. And Halleluiah! Not only are the service and pricing excellent but the hairdressers are top notch. And we haven’t even mentioned the space yet.

The design of Rob Peetoom is so Zen that you can’t help but relax as soon as you walk in. Greeted by the receptionist, the waiting area is simple but stunning. The Hair Spa has 3 different large “houses” that are divided by beautiful water and stone features. The main house is the hair salon. It’s a glass house, simply furnished with dividing mirrors and chairs for the customers. The back of the glass house has the washing basins which overlook the adjoining rice fields. Getting a scalp massage while you stare out over rice fields is so Bali! The second house is where the massages and facials take place. It’s a series of lounge chairs where you can lay down and once again look over the pristine rice fields in front. Heaven. This area also contains a couple of private rooms overlooking the ricepaddies.

Upstairs is Rob’s private office that doubles as a photo studio. The third area is where the nail spa is located, as well as the stunning bathrooms and the staff headquarters.

Rob Peetoom interiors are chic and refined. It follows the beautiful tranquil aesthetic that you can see in Japanese architecture. It’s minimalist and divine. A little piece of heaven in busy Seminyak. And to be honest, I don’t know if there is any other hair spa in the world as beautiful as Rob Peetoom’s salon.

The salon's four hammocks on the front porch are perfect for resting and watching the serenity of the rice fields while your nails dry. Maria Curau is simple but striking. As soon as you enter there is a refined waiting area furnished with 2 rattan sofa chairs and a round table with orchids. The white walls are decorated with the most adorable hand-made dolls that are for sale (proceeds go to a great Bali charity). The piece de resistance is a stunning Scandinavian-looking silencing door made out of diagonal wooden panels. Inside the nail room, the predominant wall is coloured by the nail polish bottles. There is a huge window that makes the most of the remarkable view and some very comfy sofa chairs where the magic happens.
